White House Asked Howard To Stay In Blair House To Give 'Some Plausible Reason' For Refusing Obama

advertisement

Last night on MSNBC's "Countdown," Bloomberg journalist Margaret Carlson revealed that when the White House turned down Obama's request in early December, it had not yet even invited Howard to stay at the Blair House:

I reported…on December 11 and 12 that there were no foreign dignitaries booked into Blair House during that period of time. … I have the feeling they asked him [Howard] to come and stay so that there might be some plausible reason for not letting the Obamas stay there.

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

While I do think that Bush acted extremely pettily in this matter (and should be taken to task for it), the headline is a bit hyperbolic, as its claim is simply the speculation of a journalist.

Oh the -23- will come up with an excuse. They always do.

Blair House is big enough that they could have had Howard, the Obamas, and half a dozen other famlies in there and nobody would have bumped into anyone else.

I'd say the headline was just a shade past sensational, but hyperbolic? No.  The Administration spokesperson led us to believe that Blair House was booked up full.  Now we see that a facility in which several people can reside simultaneously without running into each other was unavailable because of one person.  We also find that they invited Howard after the Obamas made their request.  This is too trivial a matter to dwell upon much beyond today, but you can bet cash money that republicans would be making a huge deal about this if the family of a GOP PE were being blocked from Blair House by an incumbent democrat.

Even if they turned down the Obamas because of their anticipation of having multiple contingents of dignitaries in the facility for the Medal of Freedom ceremony, they should have made Blair House available once they were notified that most of the dignitaries would be arranging alternative accomodations.

The Bush Administration kept the family of the incoming President of the United States out of Blair House because of one non-head of state who wasn't even invited when the Obama's made their request.  Typically low class and consistent with the delusional, self-serving arrogance of this past eight years.  I am so glad to see these folks move back to Texas.

Obama, his family and followers have to get used to criticisms. He should not ask to go to the Blair House because one or two weeks later could not make a difference for the girls in the school. I know this because my own kids living overseas sometimes they arrived late in the month. The first week is all play and in an elite school like the girls are attending the school concentrates in whatever is needed.

I think once you scratch his surface his a classic class/racist. He has nothing but disdain for poor people in general and poor black people in particular.

Katrina, Katrina, Katrina, it all comes back to Katrina.

I ask you, WHO KNEW that when people were warned of "imminent death" if they did not evacuate, they would NOT evacuate?  One can certainly understand poverty, but no one could have ever predicted Mass Stupidity; and I saw both blacks and whites that stayed behind.

The government's failure (if you want to call it that when people don't have sense enough to get out of the way of a hurricane!!!) was equally to blame for the New Orleans Mayor, Nagin (who is black), and the Louisiana governor, Blanco (who is white).  Enough of Katrina already ....... and, quit making this a "race" issue, and that George W. Actually (as usual) he was on vacation and couldn't be bothered to respond. Also nearly everyone I saw on TV who was stranded was black. The fact is Bush doesn't care about poor people in general and poor black people in particular.

Sandra,  Having lived through Ike and Rita and having hosted Katrina evacuees, I need to comment on your post.

Firstly, all those who stay behind are not 'stupid'; to state this shows either a level of inhumanity and/or a lack of understanding of HOW evacuations work.  Both Nagin and Blanco(as well as Bush, point #2) are severely culpable in the enduring, enormous mismanagement of this disaster.

Secondly, The FEMA head appointed by Bush to 'handle' these disasters was a Horse Show Judge(and buddy of his, lets not forget that). A HORSE SHOW JUDGE!!! He hardly had the qualifications to work in FEMA let alone direct it.  Now there is mass stupidity.  Was Bush just betting that there would be no disasters? He did not need to do a 'rain dance', his inept Presidency was disaster-provoking enough! Please.

As for 'enough of Katrina', when, if ever, FEMA completes it's job down there, then we can close the chapter on this gargantuan piece of malfeasance.

        Lastly, Nagin is an ass.

        Regards

Barbara in Houston, to my knowledge, there were many buses provided, and people refused to go -- buses left empty.  There were other people that offered rides in their own personal vehicles, and people refused to go.  That, to me, is stupidity when the New Orleans people were told of imminent danger; black, white, rich or poor.

You stated Nagin is an ass.  Where did that come from?  My point was clear that if we're going to continue to "blame" government, then blame it at the local, state and federal level; Nagin, Blanco and Bush.

I agree, FEMA was a disaster in itself.

My argument is that "it didn't have to be such a crisis situation if people had listened in the first place."  And, furthermore, government's ONLY responsibility is to warn people to evacuate.

My family also hosted Katrina "refugees" in Northern Louisiana.  I have an inkling of what transpired.

The idea that people didn't evacuate is completely false. The majority of people evacuated. The majority of people that stayed were largely the elderly and their families that stayed with them.

The point of Katrina was those that obediently followed the orders and evacuated to the Super Dome were abandoned as unfounded rumors of roving gangs of black people causing mayhem were willingly believed by the majority (blacks and white alike) which made truck drivers reluctant to deliver supplies without security.

At the crux of all this is that evacuees followed orders and were abandoned because of racist notions about black people.

And just for the record, it was the DEMOCRAT govenor of Louisiana who wouldn't let supplies come into her state for over a WEEK!!!

        Proof, please.

Blanco asked for aid before the levees broke.  Perhaps if Bush had chosen a competent FEMA head, it would have happened.

Sandra, CamJ and subsequently toolband made responses to your statements that would have made my replies redundant.  We all work together here to converse and disagree in an enriching manner. :)

Nagin IS an ass. One shinning example is when we, in Houston and surrounding area, were suffering from the depredations of Ike, Nagin made it a point of going to the media to say (sic) they can come to NO and ask for the 'Ray Nagin special'.  That is where it came from.  That and when someone is such an obvious and profound ass, I like to say it.  Often as I can.

The true disaster was not nature's storm but the crippling under-performance of Nagin, Blanco AND Bush.  Most especially Bush.  A storm lasts for hours; the disaster called Emergency Management has lasted for years.  It is still going on and the deployment here recently was proof.

Additionally, The government's responsibility is Emergency Management, not just to provide warning.  It is part of what we pay taxes for.  Can anyone really say that the best Bush could do was to appoint an incompetent Horse Show Judge to the level of the Director of FEMA?  Come on now.  Though I agree this is not a racial issue(even though by circumstance Blacks did suffer the most), nor, as toolband stated, is it a partisan issue.  It IS most pointedly an issue that has been cited in articles of impeachment.  For my money those articles should have been signed.

That being said, I must apologise to James Andre and others who came here to the discuss Blair House debacle.

How did this become a rehashing of Katrina, the Bush legacy, FEMA, and evacuation procedures?

        Focus, people.

OK, change has come because I'm about to defend Bush.   Petty as it may be, Bush is still President for the next few days and has the right to say no.  Historically, there is quiet resentment for the incoming administration.  Who wouldn't be a bit miffed if the wildly popular new employee comes in for your job a bit too soon?  Remember, these are just people.

Obama is not without resources.  The Hay-Adams ain't the Budget Suites.  I'm sure the hotel owner LOVES the business in this economy.  I'm sure President-Elect Obama doesn't think he and the President are BFFs.  And it's doubtful this is the first or last snub of Obama's political life.  He can handle it.

The only people who should be up in arms about the refusal of the Obamas to the official, 119 room guest house is the US taxpayer.  As much as the Obama's stay (including security and entourage) will cost, the taxpayer is the only one who can rightfully gripe.

Anyone who blames Bush for this is either ignorant or themselves a racist!

No one blames Bush for the storm, just his piss-poor response. Also I still maintain that if those had been mostly white faces on TV he'd have jumped a lot faster.

As for being more on topic, this was the Bushes flipping off the Obamas. Still at least part of the time Blair House will be used for going away parties and anything that gets that punk Bush out of town is alright by me. The sooner he's gone the better.

Bush is an arrogant ass that shows his disdain for Democrats, but he has never shown a moment of prejudice that I have ever seen. The guy has kept the most culturally diverse staff than any other President, and even after 9/11 he came out quite clear about protecting Middle Easterners in the US.

I totally agree with that observation.  Blair house should be left vacant in an election year so that the only one who has access is the incoming President Elect.   This was definitely a childish in your face move on the part of the present administration.  It was probably not GW's idea.  I don't think he's had an idea since he's been in the WH.  Probably a Cheney or Rove idea.  Petty in the extreme.  That PM should leave gracefully. I don't even think it's racial.  Didn't the Bush people put out that when they were coming into the WH the Clinton outgoing group did some kind of damage or something along those lines I don't remember exactly.  Maybe someone else in the thread does.

...and to the voices criticizing President Elect Barack Obama, for the cost to the taxpayers:

The Blair House (which has 114 rooms, 37 of them bathrooms), is already cleared for security, and would not cost the taxpayers a dime.

The price to the taxpayers is a result of the extra security that must be provided not only in the hotel, by the Secret Service, but the extra expense of having extra security on the streets surrounding the hotel as well.

So for all of you "hard line critics" who want to whine about the cost to taxpayers (can you say smokescreen), need look no further than your "less than stellar" and "oh so dishonest" Bushwhacker......SURPRIZE!!!

There is only one President at a time.

Which means very little in the case of this argument.  Does being the president mean that Bush couldn't have been gracious and accomodating of the Obamas?

"All federal agencies, including the U.S. Census Bureau, must follow federal standards for collecting data on race and ethnicity. These standards define five basic racial categories: American Indian or Alaska Native; Asian; Black or African American; Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander; and White. The standards also define two ethnic categories: Hispanic or Latino, and not Hispanic or Latino. The census form lists more detailed racial categories, which the Census Bureau later aggregates into the basic categories. Census respondents may also select more than one racial category. The U.S. government uses race figures from the census and other agencies to guide many aspects of public social and economic policy. For example, census racial data can affect legislation and funding for affirmative action policies, welfare programs, and educational programs for minority groups."..................I quote MSN Encarta.

The U.S. Census Bureau uses the words "Blacks or African American."

I have read books and saw TV shows that said; Northern Africans were a mixed race people. Asian and African mixed races in Egypt and other Mediterranean Countries.

I don't think Bush is prejudice but rather just a jerk who wanted to exercise his last remaining bit of power.  As far as New Orleans goes it probably wasn't prejudice that caused the slow response but rather the complete incompetence of this Administration.  At least I hope it is incompetence and not bigotry.

We HOPE for many things, but I do believe use of Blair House was denied simply because Bush COULD. He has proven time and again his disregard/disdain of others. The man is not only ignorant, he IS biased and divisive. A sad example for a Nation's leader. I for one can't say goodbye fast enough! It turns my stomach.

I was watching Carlson last night, and generally, where I come from, "I have a feeling" does not constitute "revealing" anything definite or proven about anything.

I mean, it is an interesting piece of speculation, but that is all it is. I live in a world where some sources would need to confirm this "feeling," much as I like Margaret Carlson.

I mean, I have a feeling the moon is made out of green cheese, but that has nothing to do with the actual physical state of the moon.

So, if I owned a restaurant and you and your wife walked in with your two children and saw couples everywhere and at least 10 tables open but I tell you I hav e no tables ready....you would not get the "feeling" your children weren't welcome?

Most certainly, especially if John Howard came in and was seated right away at a table.

"Getting the feeling" isn't the problem. Proving that he "was invited to fill a seat after the fact" is.

To reveal something as a "fact," it most certainly takes more than feelings. Being turned away from a restaurant with 10 empty tables doesn't prove anything, regardless of one's feelings. They could have had half the kitchen staff call in sick that day, and had to close off a section.

BUT, if someone comes in and is immediately seated in the area with the 10 empty tables, it would prove the lie, and move beyond the level of "feeling."

That lie has not been established sequentially nor proven in John Howard's case.

Ok, the obvious way to settle this is to get info on the vacancies at Blair house for the time in question and who, besides the former Aussie PM, is filling up the rooms.  Though it wouldn't remove the speculative statements from the reporter, it would provide evidence of Bush's honesty or lack thereof.  Anyone got a link?

Brian, you're acting as if Obama is asking to move into the White House before January 20th.  He wasn't.  He was asking to use Blair House if it was available.  It seems that Bush's priorities are such that a lone former Australian PM takes priority over the PEOTUS and transition staff.

As far as Bush getting to "enjoy" his last days in office, so be it.  He's already taken advantage of these last days to put out orders that can end up screwing over millions.  Just so lon as he doesn't give in to the temptation to press that big, red, candylike button that can wipe us all out in an instant or declare emergency powers to stay in office after January 20th, I figure most things he can do on that power-tripping bender can be undone.

If he really wanted to enjoy those last days he could have Howard stay at the White House.  They could kick back - soak up some VB (or XXXX) and Lone Star - knock back some nachos - and watch the playoffs on the big screen TV.

"Obama losers"? If the Obama folks are 'losers' what are the McCain folks and the other Republicans that are dusting off their resumes? Super-losers?  Mega-losers? Ultra-losers? Hyper-losers?

                      Chris post #8

I was watching Carlson last night, and generally, where I come from, "I have a feeling" does not constitute "revealing" anything definite or proven about anything.

Absolutely correct!  A feeling does not prove anything.  But the fact that no one was booked in the Blair house when it was requested by the PE (it was offered to the dignitary at a later date) and the fact that the dignitary invited is only spending one night in the Blair house during the period it was requested by the PE proves an absolute disrespect for the citizens of this country.  Tax payer dollars are being spent by the millions to protect the PE just so Bush can impress a political friend with a one night sleep over in a 119 room mansion.  It has enough bedrooms, kitchens, and bathrooms that no one need even see or hear any other guests unless they make the effort to do so.  The Blair house should be available to all PE's from the time they win the election to the time of the swearing in ceremony.

Oh boy. I hear the ringing of the new right-wing meme already.

Let's nip this one in the bud:

In 2003, Gupta reported from Iraq and Kuwait as an embedded correspondent with the U.S. Navy’s medical unit, the "Devil Docs." He provided viewers with exclusive reports from points along the unit's travel to Baghdad and provided live coverage from a desert operating room of the first operation performed during the war and also performed brain surgery five times himself...In 2004, Gupta traveled to the international AIDS conference in Bangkok, Thailand, where he reported on the pandemic for CNN. In December 2004, he was sent to Sri Lanka to cover the disaster and aftermath of the tsunami that took more than 155,000 lives in South Asia. That coverage contributed to the awarding of an Alfred I. duPont Award to CNN..The following year, Gupta contributed to CNN's Peabody Award-winning coverage of Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath...Gupta’s passion for inspiring Americans to lead healthier, more active lives also led him to launch "New You Resolution" and later “Fit Nation,” CNN’s multi-platform grassroots initiatives against obesity. Two nationwide “Fit Nation” tours have culminated in special long-form programs that revealed the hazards of obesity in children, “Fat Chance,” and the challenges in eating healthy in a culture and regulatory environment that makes processed food so prevalent in the American diet, “Danger: Poisoned Food.”

During the 2008 presidential campaign year, Gupta reported extensively on the campaign, including the documentaries “First Patient” and “Fit to Lead” about the toll that the nation’s highest office takes on the health of the commander-in-chief and the health of the presidential candidates...In addition to his work for CNN, Gupta is a member of the staff and faculty of the department of neurosurgery at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta and regularly performs surgery at Emory University Hospital and Grady Memorial Hospital, where he serves as associate chief of neurosurgery.

Before joining CNN, Gupta was a fellow in neurosurgery at the University of Tennessee's Semmes-Murphy clinic, and before that, the University of Michigan Medical Center. He became partner of the Great Lakes Brain and Spine Institute in 2000, and in 1997, he was chosen as a White House Fellow — one of only 15 fellows appointed. He served as special advisor to first lady Hillary Clinton.

Gupta has been published in a variety of scientific journals and has received numerous accolades. His health reports swept all three health and medical awards in 2006 – the first year the National Headliner Awards honored such journalism in a dedicated category. Also in 2006, his report, "Sabrina’s Law," earned him his first Clarion award, and "Charity Hospital," his first Emmy®. He is also a contributor to 60 Minutes and the Evening News with Katie Couric on CBS.

He has won the Humanitarian Award from the National Press Photographers Association, a GOLD Award from the National Health Care Communicators and the International Health and Medical Media award known as the "Freddie." His first book, Chasing Life, was released in the spring of 2007 and became a national bestseller and was also the subject of a one-hour documentary of the same name on CNN.

A board-certified neurosurgeon, Gupta is a member of several organizations, including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, and the Council of Foreign Relations. He serves as a diplomat of the American Board of Neurosurgery and is a certified medical investigator. Gupta is also a board member of the Lance Armstrong LiveStrong Foundation.

Pretty well credentialed by ANY standards.

As if people like determined care about these strange things known as "credentials." Gupta performed brain surgery five times in the field? Psh, Doogie Howser's probably done that way more times.

determined, James got there before I could, but let me add just a bit of empirical experience.

I am alive today because of the brilliance of two neurosurgeons at MD Anderson here in Houston.  A hospital that Gupta does consultations for.  They take only the best of the best from around the world.  Brilliance IS brilliance.

The facts just may not fit your preferred partisan agenda.  Sorry, your point is not a point.

Still Dr. Gupta is a TV surgeon. Regardless of his brilliance that I am very glad.

Dr. Gupta should be next to our new PE O and make sure that he stops the habit of smoking.

Who cares.  We all know Bush is still in Jr. High.  Bush is still a little jerk and everyone will still hate him in the history books.  I hope playing petty games makes him feel better.  It continues to show his true character.... he doesn't have one.  People love Obama better and nothing will change that.  HA

I disagree that "everyone loved Bush" at any time. I didn't like the little punk before he ran and my opinion of him only went downhill after he took power. In fact when his popularity rating was 90% after 9-11 I'm proud to say I was one of the 10% who still hated him. He's such a total and complete idiot and always was.

Yes, it's true some people did.  The majority did not the first win, but he was in there anyway.  Then he poisoned the country with fear the next time, and people are usually terrified of change so the combination of the two worked.

People loved George Bush before he trashed the country too! Let's give BO a few years under the strains of the oval office before we crown him, shall we?

Yeah, I have to say that I was alright with Bush until about 3 months after 9/11. At that point, he apparently got dropped on his head and became Cheney's ventriloquist dummy.

This diatribe is just a single "journalist's" speculation.  Notice that this article never bothered to interview either the White House or Team Obama.

I think the Blair House was afraid the Obamas and their children and their friends, I'm sure with that many rooms they would invite their hood from Chicago to stay with them, would tear up the place. I have the same fear of what is going to happen to our White House!

I've heard that they want to paint the white house in 5 different colors:

Bright candy apple red, neon pink, forest green, royal purple and sunshine yellow in the form of a rainbow over the whole building.

I've heard that they want to tear it down and replace it with a model of the Millennium Falcon.

Wow, I was afraid that McCain would turn the white house into a old folks home!  Picture it:  The smell of stale ben-gay fills the air, complimentary heart monitors, defibrillator machines and orthopaedic shoes for every guest, plenty of Ensure, fiber and prune juice in the refrigerators.  Then when VP Palin visited, there could be a AK hillbilly ho down with barbequed mooseburgers for everyone on the front lawn and square dancing under the stars.    Ah, dreams of what might have been!!

Put a padded roof on the limo and Barack will wear one of those really long coats with a big wide brimmed hat and Elton John Sunglasses.....Get a life Vic.  They have been living in nice homes for a while, you think they just moved out of the projects? Or are you worried it won't be the "White" house anymore?

But while we're on the topic, can you imagine what the WH would look like with Palin living there?  Cars on blocks on the lawn, rusting metal everywhere.....

det,  You're right gal.  The Constitution has not been suspended except for that pesky first ten amendments: the Bill of Rights.  Specifically 1,4,5,6 and 8.  But that's no big deal he left a few unmarred.

If you believe that you have the same Rights or Constitution you had eight years ago, you are wrong.  It gives me NO pleasure to tell you that.

There is suspending the Constitution and then there is this.

Read it and weep.  I do.

Our honorable Congress is the one that made the mess that we are now and instead of tighten their belt they are spending more and more. Our new President is having a good ride because he is having a normal transition and everything is in place, i.e. others had to crack the eggs to make the omelette that Obama is going to eat.

Failure to reconnect with reality after 8 years of Bushworld is not a good sign Det. We both know that Congress could do very little without Bush's approval so blaming this on Congress is a little dishonest don't you think?

det,  The term 'knocking off' means that I was aware, and had nothing to do with any Vine function or button.  Sorry that term upset you.

All of the rest I stand behind.  The traitors and Criminals I referred to are Bush & Cheney, et al(just to clarify).

                                                    Regards
